Bingaman, Domenici to attend Kennedy funeral

Senator Jeff Bingaman and former Sen. Pete Domenici are among the “some 92 past and present Senators” who will likely attend the funeral of Sen. Ted Kennedy, Roll Call reports.

Domenici, though on the opposite side of the aisle of Kennedy, called Kennedy “my friend, my colleague and my ally in many legislative battles during our 36 years together in the Senate.”

Bingaman said that Kennedy “was a good friend, a superb human being, and a colleague who will be greatly missed by those who served with him in the Senate.”

President Barack Obama will eulogize Kennedy, while all four living former Presidents (Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush) are scheduled to attend.

Domenici and Kennedy teamed up to pass an important piece of mental health legislation, the Mental Health Parity Act of 2007 before Domenici retired after the 2008 elections.

Domenici served his entire 36-year career with Kennedy, while Bingaman has served since 1985. Kennedy served as a Senator longer than all but current Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) and former Senator Strom Thurmond (R-SC).
