In case you were wondering, the number of Democrats who are either in the race or have expressed interest in the race to replace Diane Denish as lieutenant governor is now at nine.
Santa Fe County Sheriff, one of the nine, told the Santa Fe New Mexican’s Kate Nash, “We got to the point of a basketball team a while back and now we’re at the point of a football squad.”
So who are the nine?
The aforementioned Solano is in the race with state Rep. Jose Campos, the executive director of the Mid-Region Council of Governments Lawrence Rael, state Sens. Jerry Ortiz y Pino and Linda Lopez. And former Democratic Party of New Mexico Chairman Brian Colon will officially announce tonight at a fundraiser.
Española Mayor Joe Maestas, ex-U.S. Navy officer Matthew Padilla and state Sen. Tim Eichenberg have all reportedly expressed interest in the position.
Four of the nine say Albuquerque is their hometown. Colón is the only candidate who lives south of Albuquerque, in Belen, while Santa Fe (Solano), Santa Rosa (Campos) and tiny Sile (Rael) are all represented.
