Well folks, if you haven’t seen Darren White’s latest campaign advertisement, here it is. Let this be a forlorn sign of what is going to be polluting the airwaves in Albuquerque for the next month. Why? Because the race is very close, a statistical toss-up according to polls, and that means both sides, on the advise of expert consultants, will be doing what they’re told they need to do to win. In the parlance of political strategery this translates to going negative.
That makes me sad. In my limited personal dealings with Darren when he was a local TV news reporter and then county sheriff, he struck me as an articulate and personable guy, regardless of how I felt about his politics. I’ve known Martin Heinrich for many years as a neighbor and as my city councilor, and I can say the same thing about him.
But none of this is going to matter. Don’t expect civility or thoughtful discourse. Nope. Today, it’s Darren exploiting the death of a deputy for his own political gain (approving the message while adorned in a bullet-proof sheriff’s vest added an extra touch of cynicim).
Tomorrow, who knows what the strategists will come up with. But you can bet it will be ugly. Respect and dignity for the electorate be damned!
