The pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List is working to oust twelve Democrats from office, including Congressman Harry Teague of New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District according to a press release from the group.
The program is called “Votes Have Consequences” and is headed by former Republican U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave.
The Susan B. Anthony List describes the program as “an effort to educate citizens about the voting records of legislators who are out of step with their districts.”
Though there have been no votes on abortion in Congress this year, the group is targeting the members of Congress and the Senate on health care reform.
When CBS News anchor Katie Couric asked President Barack Obama about funding of abortion with the public option in a July interview, Obama said, “we also have a tradition of, in this town, historically, of not financing abortions as part of government funded health care. Rather than wade into that issue at this point, I think that it’s appropriate for us to figure out how to just deliver on the cost savings, and not get distracted by the abortion debate at this station.”
The campaign says they have $2 million to spend, spread between the twelve Democrats. Bob Moore writes, “The program has a budget of $2 million, which is pretty small by today’s independent expenditure standards, especially when divided among a dozen races.”
As evidence, they cite a similar campaign by the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, in which the environmental group spent $1.5 million targeting Musgrave alone.
Teague, a Hobbs Democrat, is facing ex-Congressman Steve Pearce. Pearce, a Republican, left the seat that Teague now holds for an unsuccessful run for Senate last year.
Here are the Democrats targeted by the “Votes Have Consequences” program:
Michael Bennett (CO-Senate), Blanche Lincoln (AR-Senate), Harry Reid (NV-Senate), Alan Grayson (FL-08), Debbie Halvorson (IL-11), Frank Kratovil (MD-01), Suzanne Kosmas (FL-24), Walt Minnick (ID-01), Glenn Nye (VA-02), Tom Perriello (VA-05), Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01), and Harry Teague (NM-02).
