Candidates rile up the crowd at NMI’s multimedia mayoral debate

On Wednesday night, the New Mexico Independent and KUNM-FM,KNME-TV and Weekly Alibi, cohosted a lively debate between RJ Berry, Martin Chavez and Richard Romero, the three candidates who will be on the ballot in Albuquerque’s Oct. 6 mayoral election.

The event was held in front of a clapping, cheering (and booing and hissing) live audience at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, but it was also broadcast live on the radio and webcast online.

We asked the candidates about a wide variety of hot topics, including smart growth, sprawl and TIDDS. We asked them point-blank if they support gay marriage, what they would do to improve the city’s abysmal dropout rate and how they proposed to protect women among rising rates of violence.

Want to know how they answered? You can watch the debate on KNME-TV Channel 5 on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. Or watch the video above and click the box below to read a transcript of the live blog.
