In light of President Obama’s “Welcome Back to School” address, set to be viewed in classrooms across the country next week, some parents are in a tizzy and do not want their children to participate.
Peter St. Cyr cites an Albuquerque Journal story that points out “some of the parents believe the speech is more like an indoctrination.” St. Cyr reviews the many opinions firing back and forth over the issue. Federal officials claim that this program is merely trying to inspire American kids to succeed in school, as the Democratic Party of New Mexico’s executive director states:
Only the Republican Party could politicize the president welcoming students back to school.
Former ABQ Mayor Jim Baca shares similar sentiments, writing:
Only republican wing nuts could object to the President of the United States giving a speech that welcomes kids back into the classroom for the year
Local blogs are also blowing up over education and health care reform, of course.
Educator Scot Key writes about the “Race to the Top” program. As one of the most insightful education-based bloggers out there, see why he writes the following:
I’m somewhat to very concerned that our little sun-drenched piece of “Enchantment” ain’t gonna be getting any/much of the Race To the Top pie.
On to health care reform, Cocoposts frowns heavily on a recent ABQ Journal article that she calls “a rambling indictment of a public option in health care legislation in the snarky tone of an AM radio listener.”
And finally, Captiol Report discusses the film industry’s presence in New Mexico as the state faces huge buget deficits and the guv refuses to cut tax incentives for the movie makers. Although the state has brought in some pretty big names, this blogger isn’t convinced much good is coming from Hollywood’s time spent in New Mexico.
