N.M. Democrats to consider resolution in support of health care reform public option

By | 09.04.09 | 3:21 pm

The Democratic Party of New Mexico is going to consider “a resolution calling for and expressing support for a ‘strong public health insurance option’” according to a post on the Democratic Party’s State of the Party blog.

The member of the party’s State Central Committee will vote on the resolution at a meeting next week, the blog post notes.

The blog post cites the fact that support for the public option is high, with a recent poll pegging support for a public option at 77 percent. Earlier today, a poll by Research 2000 for Daily Kos showed support for “a government-administered health insurance option that anyone can purchase to compete with private insurance plans” at 58 percent.

Also, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., “has seemingly laid down the gauntlet on the public option, while the House Progressive Caucus reiterated their support for a public option. From the DPNM blog post:

The national debate for the inclusion of a public option naturally extends to the States as well. Next week at the Democratic Party of New Mexico’s State Central Committee meeting, voting delegates will be asked to approve a resolution calling for and expressing support for a strong public health insurance option.”Originally passed on August 19th by the Santa Fe County Democratic Party, the resolution notes that New Mexico ranks 49th in the country for the number of uninsured (some one in four) and that most of the uninsured or under-insured are working adults.
