The Land of Enchantment ranks 45th in median household income, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau released this week.
The Census Bureau says that New Mexico’s median household income in 2008 inflation-adjusted dollars was $43,508. That’s up from $41,042 in 2007. Median household income is a midway point, meaning that half the households in New Mexico earned less than that amount in 2008, while half earned more.
The agency’s ranking table included all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Median household income is one factor in gauging a state’s economic health. Information on poverty in each state will be released this weekend, the agency says.
For a little perspective on median household income, New Mexico ranked lower than the states surrounding it. Texas ranked 28th ($50,043), Colorado 14th ($56,993), Arizona 23rd ($50,958) and Utah 15th ($56,633).
Nationally, Mississippi brought up the rear ($37,790), barely beating out West Virginia ($37,989), Arkansas ($38,815), Kentucky ($41,358), Alabama ($42,666) and Oklahoma ($42,822).
Maryland topped the list ($70,545), barely edging out New Jersey ($70,378). Connecticut ranked 3rd ($68,595), Alaska 4th ($68,460) and Hawaii ($67,214).
