With regard to the last paragraph, yes, “years” should read “months” and you’re right, I did not read the comments on this post — not, in fact, until now, well over a year later. By the time I wrote this column, I had become so sickened by the toxicity of the comments on previous columns that I had stopped reading them.

I could buy your statement that Republicans/"conservatives" oppose Obama so vociferously because of his policies if he were making radical policy changes. But his politics are nearly indistinguishable from G.W. Bush's.
Asian wars? check
Financial sector bailout? check
Rendition for torture? check
Non-judicial trials of terror suspects? check
Support Israel unconditionally? check
Health care reform? He doesn't advocate reforming healthcare OR the insurance industry. All he's offering is mandatory insurance.
Surveillance of citizens? check
Federal control of education? check
Need I go on? The right wing has bumped its incendiary rhetoric up a notch (see Benway's link to John Perry article) because the racial aspect of the current political situation presents an opportunity for advantage. And apparently they don't care if they destroy civil society.

Obama's policies show loyalty to the status quo. The fearmongering and threats are not related to his policies. What's left? Race.

This is like when Fox News called Larry Craig, Mark Foley & Gov.
