Today the Deming Headlight has a great story on border town reactions to the census. Census officials explain the difficulty of acquiring information, as many residents refuse to open their doors because they worry for illegal immigrants that may or may not be living on the property.

Los Alamos County has ended its more than three year contract with Boyer Co. and is now looking to avoid a sole-source contract as redevelopment of the Trinity Site continues, The Los Alamos Monitor reports.

The Taos News has a report on the restoration of a Questa church, which has been given a 90 day period to come up with a restoration plan and cost estimate. Local lawmakers and residents have a sense of urgency when it comes to the project, as many consider it “the heart of the community.”

The state budget deficit may be much worse than previously thought. The projected $443M shortfall could actually be as high as $550M or more. Governor Richardson will be calling a special session to address the matter and lawmakers from around the state will convene in Santa Fe this fall to deal with the budget.

And in happier news, Rio Grande Zoo’s baby elephant now has a name. Zoo visitors voted to call the baby “Rozie.” Yes, with a “z.”
