BernCo Sheriff Darren White endorses Berry for mayor

By | 09.29.09 | 12:42 pm

Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White today announced he is endorsing fellow Republican Richard “R.J.” Berry for mayor, saying “I’m disgusted by the false, personal attacks made against Richard Berry and his family. Claiming Berry is not a businessman is like saying I’m not a cop.”

The endorsement marks a departure for White, who did not endorse a candidate four years ago, when incumbent Mayor Martin Chavez faced Eric Griego, a Democrat, and Brad Winter, a Republican for the city’s top job. The Berry campaign quickly released an ad featuring White’s endorsement of Berry.

The ad says that it “is a fact” that Albuquerque is considered a sanctuary city. The Albuquerque Police Department haspreviously accused Berry of distorting Albuquerque Police Department policy.

White ran for Congress last year and lost to Democrat Martin Heinrich. White has served two terms as Bernalillo County sheriff, but is term-limited from running for a third term.
