A group of progressive Albuquerque elected officials endorsed Albuquerque mayoral candidate Richard Romero yesterday, issuing a statement to the widely read local political Web site Democracy for New Mexico.
The group includes City Councilors Debbie O’Malley, Rey Garduño and Michael Cadigan; state Reps. Mimi Stewart, Danice Picraux and Eleanor Chavez; state Sens. Dede Feldman, Eric Griego, Cisco McSorley, Jerry Ortiz y Pino and Sen. Tim Keller; and Judy Espinoza, former New Mexico Secretary of the Environment and former candidate for Mayor.
They submitted the statement, they wrote, to make clear that there are many progressives in Albuquerque who disagree with the endorsement that Barb Wold, who runs the site, made of incumbent mayor Martin Chavez earlier this week.
The recent Albuquerque Journal poll makes it clear that Romero has the momentum to win, they stated.
“…On this matter of vital importance and urgency, we disagree strongly with Barbara’s personal endorsement in the mayor’s race that was posted on this blog,” they wrote after expressing that they were long-time supporters of Wold and the DfNM website.
“…We stand with Richard Romero, a longtime fighter for progressive issues who we can count on. He’s what Albuquerque needs.”
