ABQ Elections: Early and absentee votes nearly double 2005

By | 10.06.09 | 8:12 pm

In 2005, there were 10,746 early and absentee votes cast in the Albuquerque mayoral race. In 2009, there were nearly twice that: 20,251 votes cast.

The other big difference in early and absentee votes between 2005 and 2009 is that in 2005, Martin Chavez won the early and absentee votes en route to an easy win in which he nearly got 50 percent of the vote. This year, Richard “RJ” Berry received over 40 percent of the early and absentee votes.

The question for the increased early and absentee votes is whether this is just a larger percentage of total voters who opted to not vote on election day or if it is a harbinger of increased voter turnout.

The total turnout in 2005 was 86,757 votes for the mayoral race; already 23.34 percent of that number have cast their votes.
