Common Cause: Photo ID requirement didn’t appear to be a big problem

Tuesday marked the first time Albuquerque voters were required to show a photo ID at the polls, but despite fears, it did not appear to significantly impact voting.

“We were worried about photo ID being an issue because last year people didn’t need to use it, but …we saw very few instances in which it was an issue,” Steven Robert Allen of Common Cause said Tuesday night.

“Overall, in terms of the administration of the election it seems to have gone fairly smoothly,” Allen said. ”There were some scanners that weren’t reading the ballots early on…but all of them were fixed by 2 p.m. the County said, so all of the ballots that were not being scanned were eventually fed in and there was no hand-tallying at those precincts.”

The main concern of voting rights advocates about requiring photo ID is that some people might be prevented from voting, but Allen said he did not hear any reports of that happening.

“We heard of a couple of instances where people did not have their voter ID, but in both instances people retrieved their ID and came back and voted and did not have to use a provisional ballot,” Allen said.
