No second term for Española mayor Maestas

By | 10.09.09 | 11:02 am

Española mayor Joe Maestas has decided not to run for a second term, the Rio Grande Sun reports. Maestas made an unsuccessful bid for a seat on the Public Regulations Commission in 2008.

Maestas told senior staff and city councilors about his decision last week, and already  a city councilor who was once an ally of Maestas will be running for the vacant position.

Mayor Pro Tem Alice Lucero told the paper, “I have decided to run for the office of mayor.”

The seat will be up for election in 2010.

Where will Maestas set his sights next? He already has announced he will not be part of the incredibly crowded Democratic lieutenant governor race.
