The Tom Udall for Senate campaign has suggested dates for the three local-broadcast debates later this election season.
But it seems that U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, Udall’s Republican opponent, got his way with three locally televised debates in addition to the one debate on the nationally-televised Meet the Press; this means KOB-TV, the local NBC affiliate, will get two debates. Meanwhile, PBS affiliate KNME-TV, is also expected to organize some kind of Senate forum with both candidates, although nothing yet has been agreed to.
The two campaigns had already agreed on KOAT-TV debate on October 26th. The debate schedule suggested by the Udall campaign is as follows:
- October 15th, sponsored by KOB-4
- October 18th, sponsored by KRQE-13 and AARP
- October 26th, sponsored by KOAT-7 and the Albuquerque Journal
“New Mexicans deserve to see both of these candidates side-by-side, engaging in a vigorous exchange of ideas and discussing their very different visions for the direction of our state and nation,” said Udall Campaign Manager Amanda Cooper.
The Pearce campaign previously released a suggested schedule of these dates:
- KOB: September 23rd, 25th, and 30th
- KRQE: Between October 15th and 19th
- NBC’s Meet the Press: October 5th, 12th, and 19th
The bone of contention now looks like it would be the date of the KOB-TV debate.
This comes on the same day the Pearce campaign put a comic on their website mocking Udall for not agreeing to the second debate on the local NBC affiliate. "Wait, is he saying a nationally syndicated show has the same audience as local news? Who is he kidding?" read the thought bubble from a depiction of former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw.
Brokaw is currently the interim moderator on Meet the Press.
Judging by past debates, the times will be different than local news broadcasts.
