The final health care reform bill passed Tuesday in the Senate Finance Committee with a 14-9 vote. Senator Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., voted for the bill.
Bingaman said in a statement (pdf) “It is a very good bill for Americans and, in particularly New Mexicans, who already have insurance.”
The Finance Committee bill does not include a public health insurance option. The other Senate bill, and all three House bills, include public health insurance options.
So what’s next? Now Senate leaders and the White House will work to merge the bill with the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee health care reform bills.
The only Republican to vote for the bill in the Senate Finance Committee was Olympia Snowe, from Maine.
Today, speaking from the Rose Garden, President Barack Obama warned, “this bill is not perfect and we have a lot of difficult work ahead of us.”
“But I do believe the work of the Senate Finance Committee has brought us significantly closer to achieving the core objectives I laid out early in September,” Obama said.
