Teague raises $257K in third quarter

Congressman Harry Teague announced this afternoon that in the third quarter of 2009 he raised $270,000 $257,000 toward his bid for re-election in the 2nd Congressional District. This puts Teague’s cash on hand at over $757,000, according to his campaign.

Teague’s opponent, former U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce, raised more than $500,000 in the quarter, his first quarter in the race, and has $459,612.80 cash on hand.

“One of the primary reasons I ran for Congress was because I thought people in southern New Mexico needed and deserved a Representative who would listen to them and who would stay in touch with the district instead of packing up and moving to Washington,” Teague said in his statement.

Pearce said in a statement the race is not about him, but rather “is about stopping the runaway liberal spending policies that are burdening future generations. It’s about fighting for jobs, economic opportunity and traditional values.”

Teague won the open seat in election, defeating Ed Tinsley, after Pearce left the seat to run for Senate. Pearce lost to Tom Udall in the general election in November.

The race is considered to be one of the more likely seats to go from Democratic-held to Republican-held according to some political analysts.

This post has been updated to correct an error in the amount of money that Teague raised.
