It is amazing to me that the Richardson/Denish Administration does not look in it's own house for budget cuts. The 600 exempt employee friends of this administration need to be cut first bach to the 167 which were employed during the Johnson Administration. At an average salary of 75k including benefits, this would save over 32 million dollars. Use the 32 million to save teachers. At an average salary of 50k including benefits would allow the school districts to save or hire over 600 teachers.

Does the state really need to keep 5 airplanes in the fleet including the Citation Jet for the governor to roam the country? Let's get serious here.

Brother - I'd say you don't contribute to the problem! I appreciate rural issues - been there. But the bloat within the educational establishment has to cease - and it'd be nice if our kids could actually get an education and not drop out because they are bored. Bless you for your work.

In a lot of ways, I agree with you Astute. However, I have 24 years under my belt. I teach in a one hall building with 96 kids 9-12. Our Principals serve as Special Ed Directors, Athletic Directors and substitute teachers. I myself teach 6 classes (one after school for no pay), coach track & field, serve as the District technology Coordinator, network administrator, IT Director, web master, Class sponsor and like many of my colleagues I have 6 different preps and serve on multiple school related committees while also constantly trying to raise money for programs that will not survive due to lack of monies. In the rural schools, we are literally squeezing blood from the proverbial turnip.
However, as long as our system continues to graduate students because of their age and time served, and not on whether or not they have demonstrated proficient knowledge of required subject matter competencies within a linear individualized education plan, well the outcome will be the same. Education should be based on individual proficiency and not grade/age level.
Also, why haven't we, in these rural areas with 3 or 4 schools within 10 or 25 miles of each other, developed county schools that could immediately lower administrative, maintenance, infrastructure and instructional costs while having enough "student bodies" to provide the same programs as our urban counterparts. Build only one Gym, one cafeteria, one vocational shop...etc.
The problem is that educational directives and decisions are made by bureaucrats and people with political agendas (which can often include school boards) instead of by the professionals that work in the field.
Those same bureaucrats are now getting ready to yank the rug from under this school district. And sir, with us, you ARE getting your money's worth.

They don't get paid ... so they are worth every penny. They get a per diem to off set their expenses. The per diem is set to federal standards ... so when the feds get gluttonous - there is some splash over benefit here.
