New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD) Secretary Cindy Padilla has been chosen to serve as principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the federal Administration on Aging in Washington, D.C., Governor Bill Richardson announced today in a press release.

Padilla will begin her new job in the Obama administration on November 16.

“Cindy Padilla has been a tremendous asset to my administration, most recently as the state’s top advocate for New Mexico’s aging and vulnerable citizens,” Richardson said in a statement. “I am pleased that she will be able to expand that service nationwide and I wish her the best of luck.”

Richardson named ALTSD Deputy Secretary Michael Spanier as acting Secretary “until further notice.”

Padilla had been confirmed by the state Senate for the position in New Mexico in February of 2008.
