New Mexico Congressmen Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan, both Democrats, took to the floor of the House Thursday to advocate for solar energy in backing H.R. 3585, the Solar Technology Roadmap Act. The bill, which passed, the House of Representatives 310 to 106, would help aid solar technology initiatives and build on investments under the stimulus package.

Heinrich amended the bill “to release a draft roadmap at least one month prior to publication in order to ensure the public has the opportunity to provide their input.” The amendment passed the House unanimously.

“Incorporating public comments will ensure that the solar roadmap is an efficient, effective blue print for meeting our full potential in utilizing solar energy,” Heinrich said on the House floor yesterday.

Lujan highlighted New Mexico’s potential to become “a leader in solar energy production” in his speech on the House floor “We have over 300 days of sun a year and a recent study by the American Wind Energy Association found that New Mexico ranks second in the nation for potential solar-energy capacity,” Lujan said.

Rep. Harry Teague, D-N.M., also voted for the legislation.
