Governor Bill Richardson isn’t happy with the budget solutions passed by the state legislature during the week-long special session that concluded on Friday evening, the Associated Press reports. Richardson told the wire service, “every possible action, including vetoes, will be on the table.”
The reason is that Richardson says the deep cuts sought by the Legislature’s legislation would most likely result in layoffs, Richardson told the AP in a statement.
A common theme in the Senate today was that these cuts were just a “band-aid” and that more fixes would be needed in January to fix the budget problems. Sen. Rod Adair, R-Roswell, said, “The wound is still going to be open and we’ll be back” to fix the budget gap in January.
In January there could be a $1 billion budget shortfall.
While Richardson said the cuts were “excessive,” many legislators said they are just the tip of the iceberg.
