H1N1 flu cases coming at a “steeper and earlier” rate than expected

By | 10.26.09 | 8:19 am

President Barack Obama declared a national emergency due to the H1N1 flu outbreak on Saturday, and an article in the Santa Fe New Mexican says health care providers in Santa Fe are “slammed,” because the flu has hit “at a steeper and earlier rate than anticipated.”

This isn’t just something in Santa Fe. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says on the H1N1 flu update portion of its Web site:

Visits to doctors for influenza-like illness (ILI) increased steeply since last week in the United States, and overall, are much higher than what is expected for this time of the year. ILI activity now is higher than what is seen during the peak of many regular flu seasons.

USA Today quotes experts saying that Obama’s emergency declaration is “no cause for alarm.”
