NRCC: Pearce graduates from “On the Radar” to “Contender”; Barela does not

In late July, the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) named two of the Republican challengers in New Mexico part of their Young Guns fundraising program. Today, one of the two, Steve Pearce, moved up in NRCC’s ranking system from “On the Radar” status to the more promising “Contender” status while the other, Jon Barela, did not.

Pearce is one of the Republican Party’s top recruits in the nation. The former Congressman has raked in more than $500,000 while Teague raised over $250,000 in the 3rd quarter for his re-election campaign. Teague still leads in cash on hand by about $300,000.

Contender status is still below the top tier of “Young Gun,” but Pearce is one of just nine Republican challengers to reach the Contender level.

While Pearce’s fundraising raised eyes and forced attention to southern New Mexico, Barela’s 3rd Quarter fundraising was called pedestrian by The Hill.

Incumbent 1st Congressional District Representative Martin Heinrich raised over $235,000 in the third quarter and has over four times as much cash as Barela does.

According to Roll Call, “Candidates are named to the Young Guns program by meeting individualized benchmarks, which include developing grass-roots support, fundraising and creating a media plan. Those benchmarks become higher and more stringent with each level of the program.”

In addition to the nine promotions, nine more candidates were added to the Young Guns progarm.
