The Hill: Teague a “no” on the most robust public option

An internal poll of Democratic members of Congress, leaked to The Hill, shows Rep. Harry Teague is a “no” vote on the most robust version of the public option the paper says.

Those not on the list (pdf), including Congressmen Ben Ray Lujan and Martin Heinrich, are solid “yes” votes on a robust public option, The Hill reports.

Teague is concerned with the costs of a health care reform bill, Teague Communications Director Sara Screiber said to NMI in an e-mail earlier this week.

“We should keep in mind that our goal here isn’t to give big health insurance companies another 40 million customers,” Screiber said. “Our goal needs to be lowering individual health care costs, bringing down the cost of health care for everyone, and controlling deficit spending.”

“Right now, the House proposal does not do enough to address these issues.”

According to a map by National Public Radio, 25 percent of adults under the age of 65 in Teague’s district are uninsured, while 10.3 percent of those under the age of 18 are uninsured.

But an Albuquerque Journal poll from last month showed that a plurality of New Mexicans opposed a public health insurance provision, though support for the public option in national polls have increased since then; this is the only poll to gauge support for the public option in the state of New Mexico.
