In any case it's looking more and more like a 'short con', in which an outside man ('shill') pretends to conspire with the mark to cheat the inside man, while in fact conspiring with the inside man to cheat the mark. This is starting to resemble a game of Three-card Monte, a confidence game in which the victim, or mark, is led into betting a sum of money on the assumption on that they can select 'the money card' from three face-down playing cards.
