Former U.S. Representative Heather Wilson announced Thursday morning that she will not be running for elected office in 2010. In an e-mail to supporters, Wilson said: ”l am aware of the demands and limitations of elected office.” There had been much speculation that Wilson would possibly run for governor in the Republican primary in 2010.
“Over the last ten months a lot of New Mexicans have encouraged me to run for Governor in 2010,” the e-mail read. “I understand why New Mexicans want a strong leader to restore fiscal responsibility and integrity in Santa Fe and I deeply appreciate the confidence so many New Mexicans have expressed in me.”
The e-mail did not say that she would not run for elected office in the future, just in 2010.
“My work in the private sector is satisfying, I do volunteer work that matters, and I am enjoying having more personal time to spend with family and friends,” Wilson wrote, adding, “The Governor of New Mexico has no significant national security role — an issue area that continues to be an important part of my life.”
Wilson is an Air Force Academy graduate and Rhodes Scholar who has a Doctorate of Philosphy in International Relations from Oxford University.
Wilson was considered by many to be the top tier gubernatorial recruit for the New Mexico Republican Party. She ran for Senate in 2008 but lost in the primary to U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce. Pearce lost in the general election to Tom Udall.
Currently in the Republican field for governor are state Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones of Albuquerque, Doña Ana County District Attorney Susana Martinez, PR firm owner Doug Turner and former state GOP Chairman Allen Weh.
Lt. Gov. Diane Denish is currently the only announced Democratic candidate for governor.
