In an announcement sent out today, Gubernatorial candidate Allen Weh credited “a strong grassroots effort” for helping him get the 2,124 signatures necessary to qualify to be on the primary ballot.
Lt. Gov. and Democratic candidate Diane Denish, the only announced Democratic candidate, collected more than 6,000 signatures by October 7. Denish also credited a “grassroots organization.”Weh, the former Republican Party of New Mexico chairman, also used the press release to take a shot at Denish, saying, “With corruption plaguing our state government and businesses under siege, New Mexico cannot afford to endure four more years of the same with Diane Denish.”
The release said the signatures would get Weh’s name on the ballot “regardless of the results of the Pre-Primary convention slated for early March.”
When asked by the Independent if this meant she believed there to be potential trouble at the pre-primary convention, Weh campaign manager Whitney Cheshire responded, “No. We aren’t worried at all. It was a factual statement.”
“It was relatively simple to complete what is known as a cumbersome task,” said Cheshire. “It’s another example of Republican voters lining up early behind the candidate of their choice, and what they’re choosing is seasoned leadership.”
