"The famous Lucius Cassius, whom the Roman people used to regard as a very honest and wise judge, was in the habit of asking, time and again, 'To whose benefit?' Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 ~ 43 BCE)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cui_bono

Remarkable isn't it how on both sides of the widening partisan divide everyone seems to be losing their sense of perspective and are being sucked into a black and white world of total and uncompromising absolutes, in which the ends always justify the means.

You are what you eat as the old saying goes and this applies not only to what we put into our mouths but also our minds. Since in both cases we seem to have gotten into the habit of swallowing whatever's fast, easy to get and cheap it's probably not all that surprising our ability to think critically and see the big picture has shrunk down to going after whatever fits our immediate needs in terms of self gratification, particularly when it comes to validating and reinforcing our existing assumptions about what kinds of people and ideas are respectable and which aren’t.
