Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White is resigning his position effective November 30. White was appointed Albuquerque chief public safety officer by Albuquerque mayor-elect Richard Berry last month. The Bernalillo County Commission will appoint a new sheriff who will serve out the rest of White’s term, which ends next year.

White is currently serving his second term as Bernalillo County Sheriff and is term-limited from running for a third. White has said that he would not challenge term limits like current Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez did (though Chavez ended up losing to Berry in the election for what would have been his third consecutive term as mayor and fourth overall).

White previously served as head of the New Mexico Department of Public Safety under former governor Gary Johnson.

White will take over his new position when Berry is sworn in on December 1.
