U.S. House passes health care legislation

After hours of debate, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a version of a bill designed to reform the health care system. The bill passed by a 220-215 vote with one Republican voting for the bill. Thirty nine Democrats, including New Mexico Congressman Harry Teague, voted against the bill

Congressmen Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico voted for the bill. All three New Mexico Congressmen are Democrats.

Teague had indicated on Friday that he would vote against the bill. Heinrich and Lujan had shown support for the bill.

An amendment by Bart Stupak, D-Mich., which block abortions paid for by premiums paid with personal funds, passed 240-194, with one Republican voting present. Teague voted for the amendment while Heinrich and Lujan voted against the amendment.

A vote on the House Republican substitute for health care reform legislation failed on a 176-258 vote. All Democrats voted against the amendment while one Republican, Timothy Johnson of Illinois, voted against the amendment.

A Republican motion to recommit the bill to committee was defeated 247-187.

The health care reform bill will now be sent to the Senate.
