Former Gov. Gary Johnson to speak at UNM

Former Governor Gary Johnson will be speaking at UNM this week according to Santa Fe New Mexican reporter Steve Terrell. Terrell, writing on his blog, notes it will be at an event put on by Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP).

The event, scheduled at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Lobo Rooms A & B, in the Student Union Building at the University of New Mexico, is on the eve of an International Drug Policy Reform Conference in Albuquerque.

Recently, Johnson was in the spotlight because of a push by libertarian activists to get Johnson to run for President.

The mission of LEAP, according to the group’s Web site, is “to reduce the multitude of unintended harmful consequences resulting from fighting the war on drugs and to lessen the incidence of death, disease, crime, and addiction by ultimately ending drug prohibition.”

Johnson famously endorsed the legalization of marijuana and other currently illegal drugs while in his second term as governor.
