Today Steve Terrell of The Santa Fe New Mexican laments the lay-off of veteran AP reporter Deborah Baker, who covered the sights and sounds at the Round House for almost 20 years. He writes, “Now why’s that so sad? This way the state government can tell its story about all its bold initiatives without so many reporters nosing around, straying off topic and asking questions. What could possibly go wrong?”
Also writing on the press, The Taos News reviews its own history, and how technology has changed this high-stress, fast-paced industry. A former editor proclaims, “We’re in the information business just like trains were in the transportation business. We’ve got to find a way to adapt to the new medium and sell it at the same time.”
NM Biz Weekly reports that the National Science Foundation has awarded UNM $20 million for its DataONE project. The project created and sustains a global network of scientists and researchers to conduct observational data and other environmental research. The grant will fund research activities for five years.
KOB reports on “serious financial issues” found at the two school districts serving Las Vegas, NM. A large part of the spending has been in legal costs, upwards of $750,000, not to mention the potential sky-rocketing of future insurance rates because of these problems. The state Dept. of Ed. may take control of the district’s finances, which its done before in previous years.
