Do you have a presidential election question you’d like to see addressed in a national forum?
Public radio station KUNM is running spots asking New Mexicans to send in questions that might be answered when “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer” comes to Albuquerque Sunday to hold a Town Hall meeting that will be broadcast nationwide.
The national spotlight will continue on New Mexico throughout the week, Oct. 13 to 17, as senior correspondents Ray Suarez and Judy Woodruff broadcast from Albuquerque and KNME studios with a series of programs profiling the state and the role it plays in the upcoming presidential election.
Albuquerque is only the second “Spotlight City” The NewsHour has chosen to highlight. The first was Pittsburgh, Pa., last spring.
This PBS chart demonstrates how important New Mexico is in terms of electoral votes.
According to KNME, the NewsHour, which airs nightly from 5:30 to 6:30, will showcase the contributions of Albuquerque and the state in terms of business, science, health care and the arts, but will also tackle economic disparity, voting machines, getting out the Native American vote, state politics in general and the economy.
Off the air, correspondents will participate in local events with KNME, the University of New Mexico and Albuquerque residents, according to KNME’s Evy Todd. NewsHour arts correspondent Jeff Brown spoke with students at UNM Sept. 30 as part of this week’s special programming.
The live Town Hall from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday will be moderated by Suarez at the UNM Continuing Education Auditorium. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. and the meeting is free and open to the public.
The Town Hall topic is “What Role Will New Mexico and the Media Play in the Upcoming Presidential Election?” The event will air live on KUNM Radio 89.9 FM and will be streamed online at KNME’s website at www.newmexicoinfocus.org.
KNME said panelists will include UNM political science professors Lonna Atkeson and Gabriel Sanchez; Valley High School teacher Delbert E. Carrillo; Highland High School teacher Steve Seth; Gene Grant, columnist and host of KNME’s “New Mexico in Focus”; Journal political reporter Jeff Jones; and political blogger Joe Monahan.
