The key idea involved here is that the ABQ Journal's report "raises still-lingering questions." That seems to be the role that the Journal has been playing in our state and local politics -- to raise "lingering" questions, especially involving Democrats, and to perpetuate a campaign of trial-by-headline. Whether or not alcohol was involved in the house boat accident will probably never be resolved, but that doesn't prevent the ABQ Journal from acting as judge, jury, and executioner. From what I can see, the Journal is systematically laying the groundwork for a "throw the bums out of office" mentality, following the strategy of the Republican party.
Today’s headline story about "Drivers were Drunk" should be taken in the context of the earlier ABQ Journal report at the time of the accident, in which it was charged that the governor had “left the scene of an accident,” and this was further conflated into the mind-boggling conclusion that this “says something about the governor’s decision-making.” It merits repeating here that the governor was only a guest on the boat, he was not steering it. Only in the convoluted and feverishly biased minds of the editors of the ABQ Journal can this be distorted into a negative referendum on the governor's decision-making skills!
Why, precisely, has the ABQ Journal been trying to make political hay out of this incident? The answer lies buried near the end of today’s article, which reports that “Republican gubernatorial candidate Susana Martinez…has questioned the administration’s legal interpretation …[of the procedures followed in this accident].” Keep in mind that a couple weeks ago the ABQ Journal revealed its hand when it tried to place Diane Denish, our Lieutenant Governor and the heir-apparent Democrat candidate for governor, in its cross-hairs by attempting to inflate a $700 expense into a major ethics violation . Taken in context, what we are witnessing is another example in a long litany of cases in which the ABQ Journal – like FOX news -- is acting as a venue for the Republican party.

this casts doubt on the veracity of other governor's office employees statements about accidents we know to be alcohol related. Maybe there is something else connecting them - maybe something of a more private nature that becomes public when it involves a state governor, alcohol related deaths and repeated flights by a governor's staff from scenes of accidents?

Let's wonder when an area media outlet will ask who else might have been in the Fiero/Lavato car, and where the vehicle might have been between the time it left Rio Chama and arrived at the scene of the fatal hit-and-run, with the governor's bodyguard in the passenger seat. If the governor's state police bodyguard rode along on a hit and run, how much weight should we put in his statements about where the vehicle went after leaving the Rio Chama? Or about why he did not arrest the obviously drunken driver of the vehicle in which he was riding.

What circumstance was so risky a state police officer working close to the governor, and an attorney who routinely lobbies the governor would refuse to stop after hitting a pedestrian? Is a state police officer really to be believed that he has such poor situational awareness he does not recognize the sound of vehicle in which he is riding striking a body?

Maybe a little attention to the story would flush out some witnesses - like maybe some frightened person who was in the back seat? Maybe on his or her way home, escorted by the governor's extended social cadre of an off-duty police officer and a friendly lobbyist. Home from where? What locations would a governors body guard be visiting within range of the time between the car's departure from Rio Chama and arrival at the death scene? Let's see - there's the state capitol, but someone would have seen him there. Then there's the governor's mansion...

What fingerprint or fiber evidence was collected, or what efforts were made to collect fingerprint and fiber evidence from the back seat of the vehicle?

And for all this big foundation money coming into New Mexico to establish "citizen journalism" where can we find a timeline derived from court records and police reports to let the public know when the car left Rio Chama and when it arrived at the fatal scene?

We have governor's staff involved in two vehicle accidents, one which is established to have been alcohol related and in a social millieu that included the governor in the next room at Rio Chama. Isn't this something worth investigating just a little in the citizen journalism way, such as obtaining the court records and putting them on docstock, scribd or google docs?

Maybe some disgusted police officer would piece together enough evidence, or would suggest who to talk to about another possible occupant in the vehicle.

And couldn't we ask why a budget director traveled with Bill Richardson to Cuba -- Caribbean Cuba -- for an economic development meeting. That would be the same budget director on the houseboat with Richardson, who returned to the scene after the boat pilot and the rest of the governor's staff departed?
She's such an attractive woman with such a pleasant smile, too bad suspicions of drunken boating with the governor cast a shadow of suspicion on her Cuba junket with the governor.

that "finance secretary" seems to go everywhere with the governor...

http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1P3-1526066451....

one would think the Economic Development Director Secretary Fred Mondragón would accompany the governor to economic development meetings overseas and around the state. During a budget crisis, one would expect the finance director to be in the office TRYING TO BALANCE THE BOOKS. Exactly what is she trying to balance?

Hey a friend from Mexico told me locals suspect government people are involved with the killings down there -- that'd be I'd sure hate to be a journalist around here. Sounds very dangerous.
