Albuquerque mayor-elect Richard Berry will be sworn in today at 6 p.m. at the Albuquerque Convention Center. (New City Councilors Mike Cook and Dan Lewis will also be sworn in.) As the Albuquerque Journal notes today, the team of department heads that Berry has chosen show plenty of experience, but diversity? Not so much. As Dan McKay notes, only three of the 14 department heads are ethnic minorities and only five are women. Berry’s office counters that almost half of all his new hires–not just department heads–are Hispanic.

Capt. Manuel Gonzales will take Darren White’s old job of Bernalillo County sheriff, reports KRQE. After 20 years with the force, he plans to approach the position by “hitting the streets” and talking with deputies to understand their concerns.

The AP reports that the state’s public investment funds gained nearly $3 billion over the last quarter. These funds that supply the Public Employees Retirement Association and the Educational Retirement Board are down from previous years, but are showing much-needed growth.

Approximately $1.95 million is making its way to Carlsbad for a biofuels project, reports the Carlsbad Current-Argus. Coming from Western Refining and the state Environment Dept., the Center of Excellence for Hazardous Material Management will use the money for its work in harvesting algae and transforming it into biofuel.
