In an apparent attempt to pacify progressives, the Senate is looking into the possibility of lowering the age of Medicare eligibility from 65 to 55, the Huffington Post is reporting.
Huffington Post reporter Sam Stein cites “Democratic sources on The Hill” for the information.
“Crucial details — such as the timing of the implementation of such a reform — were not provided due to the sensitivity and ongoing nature of the deliberations,” Stein wrote. “A high-ranking Democratic source off the Hill confirmed that such discussions are taking place.”
The Senate is currently discussing health care reform; this weekend, the Senate voted on a handful of amendments and discussion and votes are continuing throughout the week.
The most highly anticipated vote is an an abortion amendment by Senator Ben Nelson, D-Neb. The amendment is modeled after an amendment by Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., which is a part of the House version of the health care bill.
Senator Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., does not think that Nelson has the 60 votes to pass his amendment.
A vote on the amendment is expected later today.
