Hughes to leap into the PRC District 4 race

Hank Hughes PhotoThe Executive Director of New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness, Hank Hughes, has announced he is running for the Public Regulation Commission in the 4th district.

“This race is about the integrity of the Public Regulation Commission and about creating new green jobs in New Mexico,” Hughes said in a statement announcing his candidacy.

District 4 is in northwest New Mexico and is currently held by Carol Sloan. Hughes, a Democrat, looks to be running on a green energy platform.

“Global warming poses a very real threat to our way of life in New Mexico and the PRC plays an important role in encouraging our utilities to move toward renewable energy and away from fossil fuels,” Hughes said in a statement. “We have a great opportunity to harness New Mexico’s solar and wind resources to meet the demand for clean, renewable energy. New Mexico’s leadership in the area of renewable energy and weatherization has the potential to create thousands of new green jobs that cannot be outsourced.”

In July, Sloan pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated battery after a criminal complaint alleged that she hit another woman with rocks and slammed a door against her. Sloan accused the other woman of having an affair with her husband.

Both Hughes and Sloan are Democrats.
