Once upon a time reporters were required to do something more then just clipping stories from other papers (now blogs) or the wire services before reworking them a bit and adding their byline. Like Monahan they had to know what they were writing about and have the skill of cultivating inside sources in order to be able to give their readers what they wanted, which was both insightful and meaningful information. But of course that was when the fourth estate was still an independent and largely adversarial enterprise rather then an instrument for the dissemination of propaganda and disinformation.

Regards "alligators": on Tuesday 12/15 Joe defined "senior alligators" as being at least 45 years old, having at least 20 years experience (preferably consecutively) in 'La Politica' and over the years having given him two major, exclusive and accurate political stories, as well as having (preferably) sought and lost political office either as a candidate or campaign operative.
http://www.joemonahansnewmexico.blogspot.com/

I'm assuming that this was a reference to those who are in a position to be able to provide him with specific information relating to this matter, as opposed perhaps to persons who are not working in or familiar with persons who were working in the agencies which lost political appointees (referred to as 'gifts from the North' in some offices). In any case this morning Joe credited "our reliable readers and Alligators" for his being able to add four more names to the otherwise unobtainable list of the 'Richardson 59'. http://www.joemonahansnewmexico.blogspot.com/

Once upon a time reporters had to do something more then just clip stories from other papers (the modern variation being blogs) or the wire services, then rework them a bit and add their byline - like Monahan they had to know who and what they were writing about and be able to cultivate sources in order to give their readers what they wanted, which was the straight dope.
