I don't think it is right to conceal anybody's compensation. It just conceals inequity and fairness. It just allows the shameless to take credit and compensation for the work of others.

My experience with non-disclosure of compensations in private corporatism is that it makes it much easier to discriminate against minorities and woman. In this case it makes it easier to not have to justify undeserved higher wages for cronies.

I really think you are doom and gloom about this. Maybe the taxpayer just wants a firm accounting of where their money is going? I don't think there is anything more than open government. Heck we all know what the retired presidents, senators, congressmen etc make, why not other government workers? As I said earlier California tried to fight this battle and it wasted a lot of taxpayer money and in the end the public won the right to know. I think it is a good thing. No secrets in government.

I wont convince anyone I guess that privacy is as valuable for retired employees of government as it would be for anyone else. We didn't steal, lie or cheat to get our pensions. We just worked hard in careers we thought would make a difference. I suppose there is little privacy anywhere any more. I happen to think my finances are no ones business but mine. The real thing happening here is envy by many who do not have defined pensions. So they think we career public servants have somehow acted suspiciously in receiving ours.

I am a PERA retiree and just as proud of my public service as you are! Because PERA and ERA are "public" pension plans they are subject to public scrutiny. I'm not delighted about this but I understand and accept this. Is this difficult to understand?

Sorry Jbaca16, when you are a public servant and you pension is paid for with tax dollars your pension is NOT just your business. The public has a firm and correct right to know how their tax dollars are spent. I have no problem with that. I fully understood this when I was hired. It comes with the territory and soon as more public servants understand this the public perception will change. Sometimes the citizens views of public servants are caused by public servants.

I do agree that defined benefit pensions are going to be targeted, but right now only for ERB. PERA is doing much better, but ERB seems to have financial and corruption (pay to play) problems. Look for the legislature to change ERB if they don't get a handle on their fund.

The double dipping was started under the giuse of needing police officers. This is one of those funny things that no politician will ever go against senior citizens or public safety. I can tell you as a retired APD officer this was a shame. APD and other New Mexico police agencies had problems with recruiting. These problems stemmed from low morale, low pay, lack of leadership etc. They should never have been passed onto the PERA, pension fund. These agencies should have been forced to fix them and not dump them onto the retirement fund. Our legislature and governor should have reviewed this double dipping law, instead of rubber stamping it. Unfortunately our legislature and governor never want to be on the NO side of public safety, even when the law is a bad one. They are so scared about being reelected that they forget to do what is right. In the double dipping case, they harmed younger workers, out of work people and helped create more corruption.

I for one will not vote for anyone who appears to be more interested in reelection than in doing the public good. The first test will be if double dipping gets repealed. The second test will be if they make transparent the taxpayer funded pensions.
