Population growth nearly ground to a halt this year in many longtime boom states, a sign the recession has taken a toll on the migration habits of Americans, USA Today reports. But not all high-growth states saw a slowing in growth. Texas gained the most new residents in 2009 — about 478,000, the U.S. Census Bureau reported. New Mexico, not a big-time boom state, added 23,000 people this year, the government agency reports.
Sounds as if a merry Christmas is out for New Jersey state government this year. Governor-elect Chris Christie and his transition aides are compiling plans to slash New Jersey state spending and state programs by as much as 25 percent in response to the continuous flow of dim financial news from the New Jersey Treasury Department, the Bergen Record reports.
In a landmark court settlement proposed Tuesday, California’s transportation agency agreed to spend $1.1 billion over the next 30 years to repair and improve state-controlled sidewalks, crosswalks and park-and-ride facilities so they are accessible for people with disabilities, according to the Los Angeles Times.
