Pre-primary convention details emerge (updated)

By | 12.29.09 | 11:21 am

Peter St. Cyr has the early word on the 2010 pre-primary nominating conventions for both the state Democratic and Republican parties. State Republicans will be holding their pre-primary convention at the Albuquerque Hilton on February 27*, while the state Democrats will be further north on I-25, at the Hilton Santa Fe Golf Resort and Spa at Buffalo Thunder, both on March 13.

Candidates can qualify for the primary ballot by receiving 20 percent of the votes at their party’s pre-primary convention. Candidates who don’t get 20 percent of the votes can also get on the ballot by collecting signatures from 4 percent of the total vote at the convention, within 10 days of the convention.

But the winners of the pre-primary convention aren’t necessarily guaranteed to win the primary race.

In 2008, Bill McCamley won the pre-primary convention for the 2nd Congressional District Democratic race, but narrowly lost to Teague in the primary.

For the Republicans, pre-primary results were even less predictive of primary results; Aubrey Dunn took the 2nd Congressional District pre-primary and Marco Gonzales took the pre-primary in the 3rd Congressional District. Dunn and Gonzales fell to Ed Tinsley and Dan East, respectively.

Update 1:50 pm:

St. Cyr updated his post with the correct date for the Republican pre-primary convention.
