South Valley residents vote against incorporation

By | 01.05.10 | 11:12 pm

On Tuesday voters overwhelmingly defeated a multi-year effort to create a new municipality in Bernalillo County’s unincorporated South Valley. Had South Valley residents approved the idea, the proposed “Valle de Atrisco” would have had a population of about 50,000. Proponents said it would provide residents with more representation and involvement in governance decisions, leading eventually to better services for residents and greater control over how the area develops.

Opponents said it would lead to higher taxes and not provide any significant improvements over the current Bernalillo County governance of the area. In fact, many claimed, it would possibly lead to a reduction in services. They won the day—overwhelmingly.  Out of the 6,372 votes cast–which represented about 29 percent of registered voters–93.44 percent nixed the idea.

The special election occurred after enough signatures were gathered from residents of the area saying they wanted to vote on the idea, and it cost approximately $300,000.
