Group proposing new ways to balance the budget

By | 01.13.10 | 10:00 am

The group Better Choices New Mexico (BCNM) is currently proposing nine ways to raise revenue and prevent more budget cuts and is releasing one proposal per day until the start of the legislatives session.

BCNM is an alliance of New Mexico groups and organizations.

“New Mexico has been hit hard and working families are hurting. People who’ve never had to ask for help in their lives are finding themselves in desperate financial straits,” said Reverend Holly Beaumont, legislative advocate for NM Conference of Churches, which is a member of BCNM. “We must make sure we don’t do anything that will make things tougher for them,” she added.

Before the 2009 special session, BCNM had a similar effort, 20 ways in 20 days (pdf).

The two suggestions in the first two days from BCNM so far are to allow combined reporting (pdf), which would allow New Mexico to tax multi-state corporations on the profits made in New Mexico, and increasing existing and instituting new sin taxes (pdf).

Governor Bill Richardson backed sin taxes at a recent speech to the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce.

BCNM will continue to propose new potential fixes to the budget gap up until the beginning of the session on Tuesday.
