The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announced that it has awarded a grant to the Center for Independent Media, in partnership with the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice, to establish The Florida Independent.

The Florida Independent will launch by June 1, 2010.  The Center for Independent Media will begin its search for an editor and reporters based in and with a deep understanding of Florida.  These journalists will lead coverage in topics such as aging, health care, housing, civil rights, and state legislation.

The Knight Foundation awarded The Florida Independent project $352,000–the largest amount given–out of $4.3 million to 24 total other projects across the country.  The projects represent the second-year winners of the Knight Community Information Challenge, a five-year, $24 million contest that helps community and place-based foundations find creative ways to use new media and technology to keep residents informed and engaged.  ”These projects help ensure that everyone has the information necessary to make decisions about their governments and their lives,” said Trabian Shorters, Knight Foundation’s vice president for communities, who leads the challenge.
