U.S. House passes Haiti charitable donation bill

A bill to allow taxpayers to claim charitable donations made to aid Haiti on their 2009 tax returns–cosponsored by all three New Mexico U.S. Representatives and more than 150 other members of Congress–unanimously passed the U.S. House today.

The bill, HR 4462, was sponsored by Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y.

“The recent outpouring of support for the people of Haiti is telling of the generosity and compassion of our great nation,” said Rep. Martin Heinrich in a statement earlier today. “Families are finding ways to give, even during these hard economic times. My hope is that this bill will make giving easier and will accelerate the much needed support for the earthquake victims in Haiti.”

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the country of Haiti eight days ago and caused devastating damage. Earlier this morning, an aftershock with a 6.1 magnitude caused additional damage to the capital city of Port-au-Prince, though how much is not immediately known.
