I listen to the State of the Union Address the other evening on TV as well. While President Obama made some positive comments and is setting forth some goals for the “middle class”. I’m wondering what is going on with the “lower class.” He also mentioned several states and cities around the United States of America, but I didn’t hear anything about New Mexico. I am writing because with the past years changes:

My daughter and her husband had to foreclose on their home. He was laid off and took nearly 6 months to get a job accepting lesser pay, with my daughter trying to go to school for nursing, and manage under the stress of losing the house, taking care of her two sons, 3 and 6, and they can’t afford insurance. She signed up for WIC when all of this started, and the WIC program was cut this year. Still the same amount of children, but make ends meet on lesser funding. She also has put the boys on Medicaid, and some things are covered, some are not. She and her husband have no insurance except the states family prevention plan where she is given birth control each month in hopes of still maintaining trying to hit the American Dream. Since her house was foreclosed on, their American Dream is down the sewage. They already lost their credit rating when her husband lost his job and they had to file bankruptcy. They called many months and talked to creditors about lowering their payments, dropping the interest to a reasonable level, etc, and then did the same with the mortgage company when they thought they would be supported by President Obama’s programs. Instead, this did not happen. I believe that battle was fought for more than a year. Our tax dollars bail out these banks and major corporations, who in turn do not help out the one’s that kept them in business. As of yesterday, we moved the kids into a much smaller home, (a condo) my daughter and her husband share their bathroom with the boys, my daughter has one more semester on nursing school, her husband is still trying to maintain a household with his job, and they are struggling to feed their family. Still my daughter and son-in-law have no health insurance. My daughter has many medical problems, paid taxes for years of work, and yet they can’t get any help for her or her husband.
In my case, I was put on SSDI 2 years ago April I believe. Now, the thing that I find the most interesting is that first of all it is a well known fact that at least in this state, only 3% get approved the first time. I was laid off from Intel because of my medical problems. Intel laid off 2000 people, so someone with medical problems makes for a good first choice. I was off on a disability leave when they did the layoffs, so I was one of the first to go. Those that were still actively working when the layoffs occurred were given a “package” to help them until they found new employment, etc. They were given medical paid by Intel for 3 to 6 months, and a percentage of money for each year that they worked for the company. I was given none of that. I was an employee for Intel for 10 years. I had to fight for Cobra through Human Resources all the way up the chain of command and finally won a 3 month COBRA payment from Intel. My medical costs during my uncovered time frame, plus the fact that I know longer had my salary caused me to have to use my retirement which cost me a fortune. I wasn’t getting paid, and even when you are approved for SSDI, there is a 6 months waiting period after the approval date to receive any benefits. I have a hard time finding the common sense in that practice, considering someone approved for disability, obviously needs medical care then but they can’t get the care they need, nor the SSDI payment they rightfully deserve. Due to the medical expenses, and trying to pay my bills and mortgage, I went from $60,000 in retirement to $16,000 and have been penalized for all that I have withdrawn because of my age. Another great benefit! I had chest pain last year in April, the ambulance took me to the hospital, and I waited 8 hours to be seen. I was kept in the hospital for 2 days, and they did the tests that they could, based on what Medicare would cover. There was a definitive test that would have said whether I did in fact have a heart attack, but Medicare would not cover that. The Heart hospital refused to give me that test. My fiancé at the time, (now my husband) asked if he could pay for my bill with a credit card so the test could be done. He was refused. I was sent home and ended up right back in the hospital after a one day release. This time I waited in the waiting room for 11 hours, because I had my husband drive me there since we didn’t have coverage for the ambulance. I was told that if I had gone to the hospital in an ambulance, I would have been seen sooner. With a heart attack, you are limited to the time you have to verify that that is the problem in which case, both times, I waited beyond that amount of time. One thing that clearly does not make sense is that at night, when emergency rooms are much busier because the daytime doctors are not available in doctor’s offices, clinics, etc, is that the hospitals close half of the emergency room and run on half the staff. Now, considering we have nowhere else to go at night, does that not sound like the most ignorant thing they can do? To me it does. We have multiple options during the day in which to seek treatment. During my second trip to emergency, I waited all night in the waiting room, with many other people, all sick, some contagious, and nothing comfortable to sit in or lie down for those 11 hours. I had to go to the UNM hospital because I could get better coverage cost wise, since I only had Medicare insurance. At 8:00 am, right after shift change, they opened the doors and it was like cattle through a flood gate. All of us were put in rooms and treatment began. Again it was too late to determine if I was suffering from a heart attack or some other heart condition. Fortunately for me, it was a different heart condition.
My charge card interests have sky rocketed from 4.9% – 6.9% to nearly 30% in most cases. How can we as the American people, begin to pay off those cards. We didn’t even know this was coming. We opened our bills and found to our surprise, these astronomical amount due. I called the card companies, and they stated that it wasn’t anything that I had done wrong, it was just the new policies of the lenders. Keeping in mind, my income has not changed and Medicare Cost of Living allowances are frozen, plus the fact that my Medicare Plan D insurance went up, as did my prescriptions. My prescriptions tripled, and my income went down.
Somewhere I am missing the boat. I’m finding it very hard to believe that the little guy or middle classmen are getting any breaks and we seem to be in the same place we have been for many years. The best you can hope for is for a wealthy relative to die and leave you their fortune. I would like to know what is going to be happening to help those of us that are suffering from these disasters over the years that have paid in thousands of dollars in taxes, so we could manage when we retired. No one can retire any more, more and more people are working into their 70’s even if only part time, to make ends meet. That too me is extremely sad.
Oh, I served nearly 12 years in the United States Navy during the Viet Nam war. Maybe I fall into the category the Viet Nam vets fell into. I’m sorry, there is nothing that we can do to help you, but hey, thanks for your service you’re your part in keeping this country safe and free, and of course your devotion to our country!
Enough said,
Kathy Sahu
U.S. citizen and tax payer for 54 years
U.S. Active Duty Military for just short of 12 years,
and a tax paying citizen all of my life

Feel free to write back if you have anything positive to say:
Kathy Sahu
8736 Westridge Place NW
Albuquerque, NM 87114
