House Rules Committee endorses video webcasting from House floor, audio in committee rooms

Video webcasting of debates and other proceedings on the House floor could start as soon as next week if a majority of all lawmakers in that chamber approve a resolution that cleared a powerful committee Friday morning.

Sponsored by House Minority Whip Keith Gardner, R-Roswell, House Resolution 1 would provide for streaming video proceedings of House floor activities, including committees that have hearings on the floor. The video feeds will not be archived, however.

In addition to passing Gardner’s resolution, the House Rules Committee also endorsed streaming audio feeds from committee hearings for this session, with plans to video committee proceedings next year, said the sponsor Rep. Jeff Steinborn, D-Las Cruces.

It’s unclear when the House will vote on the committee’s reports. If the House adopts the committee’s report of both resolutions by a majority vote, the rules would go into effect.

The Senate already provides video from the floor.
