Those licensed to carry guns in New Mexico might soon be able to skip the refresher class that is currently mandatory if a bill proposed by Senate Minority Leader Stuart Ingle, R-Portales, succeeds.
Ingle says a similar measure simply ran out of time last session, and that this bill has the blessing of Gov. Bill Richardson.
New Mexico is the only state with concealed carry to require the two year refresher course and Ingle feels the extra time and expense on citizens isn’t worth it to anyone. “If we had a lot of examples of people doing stupid things it would be different,” Ingle said, adding that the two year course was put in the bill to smooth the way to pass the original concealed carry in the state. Those who have the license would still have to qualify for it every four years.
Ingle talked more about the reasons in this video produced and provided by the Senate Republicans. The bottom line about the refresher Ingle says, “We don’t need it.”
