Domestic partnership sees first committee hearing today

Governor Bill Richardson has put his influence behind domestic partnership efforts for years. Now, in Richardson’s final session as governor, there is a final effort to push a domestic partnership bill past the finish line. And the effort starts with a joint meeting of the Senate Judiciary and Senate Public Affairs committees this afternoon.

The New Mexico Independent will be there to live blog and webcast the hearing.

Yesterday, supporters of domestic partnership, including legislators, rallied outside the Roundhouse. Cisco McSorley, D-Albuquerque, speaking at the rally, believed the Senate was close to the votes needed for passage of the bill.

However, conservatives are against the domestic partnership bill. Sen. William Sharer, R-Farmington, told the New Mexico Independent that passage of such a bill would invite a lawsuit that would make gay marriage legal in New Mexico.

Sharer has sponsored a constitutional amendment that would define marriage in New Mexico as between one man and one woman.

Last year, a domestic partnership bill passed the House but failed in the Senate 25-17.
